1948 – A Very Good Year!

Believe it or not, there are TWO vintage 1948 Airstream trailers in the Heart of Texas Camping Unit and they are both restored to absolute perfection.  One is a spectacular 1948 Liner. This is the trailer in the iconic photo of a man on a bicycle pulling an Airstream. The trailer in the photo is actually a 1947 though. The second one is a 1948 Wee Wind.  Very few Wee Winds are still around but,  there are two in the club! The other one is currently undergoing a restoration. Both trailers are  incredible pieces of Airstream history! Enjoy the photos!

Urban Camping in Dublin, Texas!

We may have been camping on a vacant lot but, to us, it was another little piece of  Airstream Heaven! The campout with The Lone Star Vintage Airstream Club and The Heart of Texas Camping Unit in Dublin, Texas was a blast. Between visiting with friends, meeting new people, the St. Paddy’s Day parade, the Carnival, and all the great food at the potlucks; we came home stuffed and exhausted but very Happy Campers!

There were so many beautiful trailers I couldn’t put my camera down! Hope you enjoy the photos!

Pot of SILVER!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

The VAC Rally in Dublin over the weekend was another awesome time with some of the best folks you will ever meet. I have tons of photos to go through still, but I wanted to share a few of my favorites in honor of the day.  An amazing thing happened Saturday evening. We had a storm scare just as the pot luck was about to begin. Everyone made a mad dash to their trailers to put chairs away and awnings up. Amazingly, the storm just missed us and the most beautiful double rainbow you have ever seen came out. It was “magically delicious”!

Enjoy the photos and have a great St. Patrick’s Day!

Peace – Love – Dublin

We are finally in our new home! We have slept in our big bed for a few nights now, taken a few very long hot showers, relaxed in our recliners in front of the TV, and are starting to feel like normal people after spending 6 months living in our Airstream. Honestly, I have to wonder, how in the hell do those people do it? Full timing is tough! Maybe if I was traveling around the country, exploring new places on some big grand adventure, I would be in heaven. But, living in roughly 180 square feet, parked in the same spot for 6 months,  during one of the coldest winters on record in Texas, is a like hell on wheels! Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love our Airstream and we are  die-hard campers, but… let’s go somewhere!

And so we are! The Heart of Texas Camping Unit is hosting the Lone Star Vintage Airstream Club Rally in Dublin during their St. Patrick’s Day Festival. 2052114_origWe will be doing some urban boondocking on a lot just down from the city park where many of the festival’s events will take place. Saturday there will be an open house from 2:00 to 4:00. If you are in the neighborhood, and would like to see inside some amazing  Airstreams, come to Dublin, Texas

See y’all in Dublin… Erin go bragh!

Lonestar Vintage Airstream Club Rally

We made it back from the rally….exhausted! There IS such a thing as having TOO MUCH FUN! The Shagadelic Airstream Gig at Barefoot Camp Rv Park was far out, righteous and groovy!

First I want to tell you about Barefoot Camp RV Park and the owners Jackie and Charlene Brister. It is located on their working cattle and sheep ranch in Bend, Texas on the Colorado River. The park is beautiful, clean and  so peaceful, we didn’t want to come home.  Jackie and Charlene were so sweet and went way out of their way to make us all feel welcome.

Charlene brought Buttermilk Pies, Pecan Pies, and the best deviled eggs I have ever eaten to the pot luck and barbeque. Jackie brought his amazing antique corn grinder out and demonstrated it for everyone. If you have ever been to Canton, Texas at First Monday you may have seen or heard one like it.  We all took fresh ground cornmeal home with us. You don’t meet people like the Brister’s very often. Thank you so much, Jackie and Charlene, for everything!

On Friday several of us hiked the trail to Gorman Falls in nearby Colorado Bend State Park. It was a beautiful hike through a native Texas landscape of wildflowers, cedar trees and cactus in bloom. The change of scenery was dramatic once we descended down the rocky path to the falls. It was just beautiful. If you visit the park, don’t miss this!

If you have ever met the President of  The Heart of Texas Camping Unit, Ann Flannagan, you know how incredible she is. She goes way, way beyond the call of duty for the club. She is so creative…she makes you want to be more creative! She held a few tie-dye parties at her home to create the fantastic tie-dyed shirts you see everyone wearing in these photos. The tablecloths on the tables and the adorable wood flower stakes with our names and WBCCI numbers were all Ann. She is AMAZING! Thank you so much Ann Flannagan for all you do for the club…you are one “Groovy Sister” and we love you!

I love the way the light reflects on an Airstream at night. I couldn’t resist walking around and taking a few pictures of the beautiful trailers and their owners enjoying the evening. Thanks Diane for posing for us! Fun stuff!

That brings us to ….”The Gig”! Dan and I aren’t usually the “dress up” type but…we got sucked into this and just went for it! Thank goodness there were other like-minded, far-out  groovy people out there to be hipsters with us!

The barbeque was amazing and I’m so sorry I didn’t get a picture of  Tony and Sandra. They brought the food and served it up in true Texas style. Thanks guys!

It was a fantastic weekend. We  made some new friends and saw some spectacular trailers. Doesn’t get any better than that! Happy Trails!

Oh…and…Peace and Love to all our brothers and sisters of the HOTCU and the Lone Star  VAC!

Polishing and Painting

Polishing sucks…OK…It sucks!  But…the results make it all worthwhile. We did a first cut with Nuvite last year to get the worst of the corrosion off but haven’t really had time to work on it since then. The Vintage Airstream Club Rally is this weekend so for the past few weeks we have been trying to get more done on the outside. Besides polishing, one priority was to repaint the badges and install the blue plastic trim insert.  After driving ourselves crazy looking for automotive paint, in the right colors and in small quantities (don’t need a quart!) we decided to just go with what they had at Auto Zone. We used Rustoleum Enamel spray paint. The blue was really the only color that had to be perfect, and it was. I painted the  “Airstream” letters on the front and back by spraying paint in a cup and brushing it on. You had to paint fast before it dried but it worked! To paint the red, white and blue “International” badges I taped each area off  and sprayed them. On the white section I just painted right over the “International” then quickly used a rag and thinner to clean the paint off the chrome letters. It was much easier than trying to tape it off…I tried that. I used the same method on the ID plate on the front…just painted right over the whole thing then wiped it off with thinner. I put 3 coats of paint and then a clear coat over everything…hope it lasts! The blue trim snapped right in and matched perfectly. It was really warm the day I installed it so I tried to get it in there as tight as possible. It was cold that night and the next morning there was about an inch long gap next to the badge where it had shrunk. I was sick! But, after the sun hit it, it expanded and fit perfectly again. Oh well…it’s hot here most of the time anyway!

We are still a long way off on the polishing but with the paint and trim…she looks fantastic! We are off this weekend to The Lone Star Vintage Airstream Club Rally in Bend, Texas. We can’t wait to see all the vintage trailers but mostly to meet up with friends again. The theme is “The Shagadelic Airstream Gig” so…think hippie! We are camping at The Barefoot Camp and RV Park located right on the Colorado River. Hopefully there will be enough water to play with our kayaks!

I’m not sure if we will have cell service but if we do, I’ll be posting pictures on instagram. You can follow me @stephanieintexas or @danintexas. It’s going to be far out and groovy weekend!

Vintage Airstream Rally Photos

The Lone Star Vintage Airstream Club and The Heart of Texas Camping Unit held their 3rd annual campout at the LBJ Grasslands North of Decatur, Texas last weekend. We are members of the HOTCU but haven’t had the chance to actually camp with them yet…one of these days! We did go out for their open house to see  all the awesome trailers, meet some great people and talk trailers….it was a blast! Here’s a few photos from the day……….
